ここのところマデリン・ペルーという歌手がお気に入りの僕は、彼女がこのベッシー・スミスが歌った "Careless Love"を、彼女のＣＤのタイトルにして歌っているのを聴き、 俄然このベッシー・スミスに興味が湧き、聴いてみました。なるほど彼女は１８９４年にテネシー州、チャタヌーガ で生まれ、９才から舞台で歌いはじめ、クラシック・ブルースの女性歌手の元祖でした。ちなみに伝説の歌姫と 呼ばれるビリー・ホリデイが１９１５年生まれ ですから、ビリーより２１才の年長です。彼女の残したブルースの数々は今日まで尾を曳き、この"Careless Love" の歌は冒頭のマデリン・ペルーをはじめ、ロック初期の女性歌手ジャニス・ジョップリン、ソウルの王様 レイ・チャールスも歌っております。このベッシー・スミスが歌った歌の数々を聴きますと、ブルースというところの 意味が深く感じ取られますよね。またこれらのレコーディングには若き日のルイ・アームストロング（コルネット）、 コールマン・ホーキンス（テナーサックス）、ジャック・ティガーデン（トロンボーン）、ベニー・グッドマン （クラリネット）をはじめとする錚々たるメンバーがバックをつとめており、ジャズの源流がブルースであることを、 我々に知らせてくれます。またこのＣＤのタイトルとなっている”マーチン・スコセッシ・プレゼント・ザ・ブルース” は映像作家のマーチン・スコセッシが総合プロデューサーとなって制作され、２００３年に公共放送ＰＢＳで放映 されたもので、ブルースとそれのアメリカ文化及び世界中の音楽への貢献についての認識を高めるのを支援する マルチ・メディア・プロジェクトの中核を占めるものであります。この映画は現代の著名監督７人により、 ７５組以上の幅広いアーチスト達が演奏していて、音楽ＣＤではその中から”ロバート・ジョンソン”、”サン・ ハウス”、”タジ・マハール”、”スティーヴイー・レイ・ヴォーン”、”ケヴ・モ”、それにこの”ベッシー・ スミス”が制作されて売られております。どうぞ興味のある方はＤＶＤ盤の映画も発売されておりますので、 ご鑑賞下さい。
